Big wins for Aon, Ayala Corporation and Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, who were among the highlights at StrategicRISK’s Asia-Pacific Risk Management Awards 2018.

Singapore’s Grant Hyatt hotel played host to an awards dinner attended by the great and the good in the region’s risk management community.

The coveted prize for Asia-Pacific’s Risk Management Team of the Year went to Ayala Corporation –the Philippines’ conglomerate which spans real estate, telecommunications, utilities, logistics, financial and insurance services.

Ayala added more laurels when Victoria Tan, the company’s risk management and sustainability leader, won the award for Asia-Pacific Risk Manager of the Year.

On receiving the award, she said: “Everything has paid off and this award and recognition will energise me and encourage me to do more. Risk management is really creating value in organisations and I thank the management for trusting me.”

Tan was also crowned Asia Pacific Risk Manager of the Year.

The prize for Enterprise Risk Programme of the year, sponsored by Zurich, went to Manila Water Company, an Ayala subsidiary, and provider of water and wastewater services to more than six million people in the Philippine capital.

Jocelyn Frances Sison, the company’s chief risk officer, accepted the award and said: “I’m very happy because it is testament to how ERM has grown in the company and how leaders are embracing it. I’m sharing this award with everyone in the organisation because they did their part.”

Risk Advisor of the Year went to Aon, the big broker and risk advisor besting a competitive field.

The awards also celebrated innovation among the commercial insurance community, with Aon adding to its haul by picking up the broker innovation award for its project to target under-insured threats.

Swiss Re Corporate Solutions triumphed in the insurer innovation category, sponsored by Allied World, for its Insur8 initiative – the first-ever typhoon warning insurance product for Hong Kong firms.

The global insurer also beat the opposition for a third time to win the laurels for the Best Risk Training Programme of the Year category.

On accepting both awards, Devpriya Misra, head of sales and key account management, APAC director said: “We are very excited to win the innovation award. Innovation is at the core of what we do and we’re very pleased for the recognition.”

On the training programme of the year award, he added: “The business interruption programme that we’ve put together for our risk managers deals with issues that have not been solved by insurance and this training programme helps the market solve some of those challenges.”

This year’s StrategicRISK award went to Transurban, which develops and manages urban toll road networks in Australia. The firm has blazed a trail with its recent trials of connected and automated vehicles.

On receiving the award, Karl Davey, the company’s head of risk, said: “It’s a great achievement. The entire business, the executive and the board really embrace risk management and has really given us an opportunity to provide the business a process that supports what they do. Great work for the risk team.”

Clayton Scott, account director, APAC, Sword picked up the award and said: “We were very pleased to be nominated for a start and to win is amazing. We’re always putting the work in and trying to do the best that we can. It’s a tough market and it’s competitive and we’re always trying to innovate.

Honouring fresh talent in the discipline, the award for risk management new starter of the year was given to Nigel Tay, an enterprise risk management specialist at Singaporean telecoms provider StarHub.
